Our Home, Randolph NJ

The township of Randolph NJ is located some forty odd miles, or an hour’s car ride, west, northwest from New York City.  Roughly 994 feet from sea level, its motto boasts, “Where life is worth living”. Once a thriving resort haven in the early 20th century, mainly due to its woodland acers, fresh water ponds, lakes and pristine air.  Randolph was peppered with bungalow colonies, over 30 in its heyday, along with 10 hotels that hosted such performers as Phil Silvers and Frank Sinatra.  Pugilists Max Baer, Floyd Patterson, James J Braddock and Rocky Marciano all trained and sometimes fought at the Saltz Hotel.

Randolph’s early inhabitants were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, but were pushed out by the arriving, and ever expanding European colonists.  The first settlers of the area, predominantly Quakers, such as Hartshorne Fitz-Randolph who eventually became the town’s namesake, were attracted by the abundant natural resources and rivers such as the Black River, South Branch of the Raritan River, The Whippany River and the Rockaway River, which provided power for such industries as Grist Mills, Mining, Farming and Distilleries.

Randolph is home to New Jersey’s first iron mine, established in 1713.  Many of the area mines provided the core materials for weapons used during the American Revolutionary War, and was essential to supplying the Continental Army during their winter bivouac at Jockey Hollow in nearby Morristown.

Today Randolph is considered half rural, half suburban with 25,734 inhabitants residing in 9,013 households who enjoy the numerous parks the recreation areas such as Brundage Park, Freedom Park, Cohen Farm Park, and several others dotted throughout the community, many with ball fields, volleyball and basketball courts.
