Why Choose Fiber Cement Siding?

In your search for the perfect new siding for your home, you’ve likely come across a few different types. One type that you may not know much about is fiber cement siding. Although it may not be as well known as vinyl or aluminum siding, it’s a great option for many homeowners today. Here’s everything you need to know about fiber cement siding and why you should choose it.

What is Fiber Cement Siding?

Fiber cement siding was invented by James Hardie in the 1980s. It is made up of sand, water, cement, and wood fibers. These cellulose fibers help the mixture to become weather, fire, and insect-resistant, which makes it an ideal siding material. The fiber cement material has been specifically engineered to be one of the most high-performing siding options available to homeowners. Here’s why you should choose it.

It’s Customizable

When the fiber cement is mixed, it becomes malleable and can be shaped and molded to mimic the look of a variety of materials. The most common lookalikes are shaped to resemble grains of wood, stucco, or even shingles. Because it is so versatile, it is often used during repairs of historic buildings and homes. Though you can also find vinyl siding that imitates the look of wood, fiber cement is much more realistic.

The customizability of fiber cement siding doesn’t stop at shape and texture; you can also choose from several colors to give your home the desired aesthetic. Like with other types of siding, you’ll eventually need to repaint them. Fortunately, the type of paint used for this siding is guaranteed to last around 30 years – around twice the lifespan of vinyl – and the siding itself will last even longer. That means by the time it takes the fiber cement to need a new coat of paint, you would have already replaced vinyl siding twice.

It’s Durable

Fiber cement is one of the most durable materials you could use for house siding. Unlike other materials, it isn’t susceptible to shrinking or expanding with changes in temperature and humidity, so you won’t see any cracking or crumbling. In fact, fiber cement is perfect for use in climates with regular inclement weather; it will resist UV rays, strong winds, and ice and snow. When it is installed properly, fiber cement siding should last over fifty years.

It’s Low Maintenance

Because of its durability and ability to take a beating from the weather, it’s also quite easy to clean. All you need is a strong garden hose to rinse off any dirt or leaves. For resistant marks or debris, simply use a sponge and a mild cleanser.

It is Fire Resistant

If safety is a top priority when considering siding, fiber cement is your best option. After curing, the cement will not act as fuel for a fire, and it will prevent fire from burning through to the other side. Vinyl siding, on the other hand, will melt easily in a fire and can even do so when near a hot grill outside. Wood siding will, of course, be easy fuel for a fire.
